The first of four documentaries highlighting the impact of four black American performers on pop music in the 1980s gives some long-overdue recognition to the role of Ms Jackson in paving the way for the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce . Although claiming some of her later work is cutting edge is over-egging it a bit. We get the story of her struggle to crawl out from underneath the weight of her brothers’ fame, and the competitive nature of her relationship with Michael – who even intrudes here in a throwaway section about how he broke MTV for black acts. Coming from such a famous family, there is a wealth of archive footage to revel in, but also insights from producer Jimmy Jam and the woman herself.
